Wednesday marked the 2 week anniversary of our residence in the beautiful city of Avondale. I'm chilling out with Clint last night on the couch, we're watching the evening news via bunny ears and something caught my attention:
"Police are investing a possible homicide that occurred yesterday evening on 4th Ave South in Avondale. A woman knocked on the door of 4100 block home and then collapsed. She was pronounced dead at the scene."
In case you didn't know: that is our street, and about 3 blocks away.
Joy.
So if that's not enough, my neighbor tells me two days ago that a friend of the people who rent the house across the street got held up at gunpoint. The offenders made the guy drive to the nearest ATM and empty his bank account and then dumped him off in a field near the airport.
Again, joy.
On a completely unrelated note, I've been talking to a lot of people about what kind of gun I should buy to keep in my bedside table when Clint goes on extended tours. Thoughts?

If you are serious about a gun, you should enroll in a gun safety class, one that can really train you on how to use it. Not just "here's how you hold it" but techniques to help you avoid using it/panicking so that you don't shoot Clintboy when he's getting back late from a gig. Honestly though, training Wilco to bark on cue is your easiest and safest weapon again potential break-ins.
As for crime, a 14 year old three doors down from me shot and killed the 70-year-old neighborhood store owner last week. A 14 and 16 year old murdered a guy in his car at the crosstreet to mine about two years ago. And a few months ago there was a failed drive-by up my street-- there was a 6-month-old baby in the backseat of the shooter's car. In my neighborhood, it's not the hardened criminals you watch out for as much as it is the kids.
I recommend a .38 revolver. Basic but effective. Nothing automatic; might jam and requires more maintenance and knowledge/skill.
Classes are good, of course, but mrs. john in birmingham and I will take you shooting for the practice!
matthew - excellent points. thankfully wilco has already started barking to certain cues, which has been a huge relief because before we bought this house he had barked a grand total of one time ever.
about the rest: i'm really not itching to HAVE a gun until clint goes on that long tour with IG in february and i'll be sleeping by myself for a solid month. when he's at home, we'll probably keep it put up in a closet or something to avoid the accidental shooting of the husband thing. we're also looking into getting an alarm system.
sounds like the kids on your street didn't get hugged enough. sad.
john - as you can see from my latest post, i really liked the .38 revolver. as for practice, i'd love to go anytime you guys are going. the more practice the better!!
If you do wind up buying a handgun, I'd recommend a S&W Airweight. I carry one when walking to / from work after dark. It's .38 Special, 5-shot revolver, but is lightweight, easy to handle, control, use (literally, point it and pull the trigger), and is very easily portable. And, being a .38spl, it will, how you say, get the job done should the need arise.
